Shuffle, Shuffle, Toil and Trouble...

Posted Wednesday, January 12, 2005

Check it out, it's my first lame paraphrased title!
So anyways, as you've most likely heard there's a new iPod in town. Here's my take:

I love my iPod, and I am quite a fan of Apple. But this new player could well be the first iPod that flops. I sure wouldn't buy one. If I have a gig of music, I don't want to be listening to it blind. I want to see what's playing, and I want to be able to choose what plays next easier than having to cycle through my entire collection one song at a time. The iPod needs a screen for this, as well as other stuff (how do you know how much battery life you have left?). And as far as I can tell, this new iPod doesn't even have a hold button.

I know I'm probably not the intended audience for this player (since I've already got a 20GB iPod), but I would suggest that anyone who's looking at buying one of these should really check out a competing model. You know, something with a screen.

Also, here's how to hack your iPod into a new iPod shuffle.

It doesn't really need a screen.

What it needs is album back/foward buttons. And a synthesized voice (generated by iTunes) that reads back the album/folder title. That would be fine for the 20 or so albums that a 1 GB mini could hold

Erm, I'm gonna have to agree with Tim on this one. Since the dawn of time, CD-Players have had at least little LCD windows to tell you what track you're listening to. This thing is craxy!

Now that I've read it a bit more... random-only music? Thats also craxy. Less of a need for a screen, but the need is still there.

Oh also, yes, that was a really lame title :P

2. Do not eat iPod shuffle.
wtf?

The "Do not eat iPod shuffle" thing makes more sense if you look at the apple.com iPod shuffle page, specifically at the picture comparing the size of iPod shuffle to the size of a packet of bubblegum. After the words describing the comparison, there's a little (2) indicating to look at footnote 2.

That cracked me up when I worked out what was happening.

Also quite bizarre to note is that the UK version of the site it has been specifically changed to:
"Do not chew iPod shuffle" (screenshot here)

The only thing the iPod Shuffle is good for is to listen to a few songs at random and basically brag that "I've got an iPod". Those who don't know anything will be impressed. Those who do know will snort in derision and say "what a cheapo you've got". So, it's up to the individual I guess.....
